The Girl Scouts Facing a Lawsuit With Ingredients Like Heavy Metals and Pesticides in Their Cookies

We all love our Girl Scout cookies, but is it true that they're actually loaded with chemicals and pesticides?

According to Topclassactions.com, on March 11, 2025 a class action lawsuit was set into motion in New York federal court against the Girl Scouts of the USA alongside Ferrero U.S.A. Inc. and Interbake Foods LLC, after heavy metals and other additives like pesticides were found in a cookie focused study. The two plaintiffs, Danielle Barbaro and Judy Cholewa are saying that "alleging violations of state statutes and common law."

"According to the lawsuit, the cookies contain heavy metals, such as aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, as well as pesticides, including glyphosate." All of which were found when the Moms Across America and GMO Science conducted a study Danger in the Dough: Unveiling the Toxic Contaminants in Girl Scout Cookies.

This study has received some backlash, because according to USA Today the findings are not "published by a scientific journal or peer reviewed...Experts say the study was also of a small sample size − only 25 cookies − and compared heavy metals and glyphosate levels to the Environmental Protection Agency's water safety limits, which aren't applicable for food."

On February 6th, 2025, the Girl Scouts of the USA responded by saying "Girl Scout Cookies are safe to consume" and meet all regulations set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and EPA."

In conclusion, the two plaintiffs hope that anyone who purchased these cookies in the United States will help represent them, and will continue their lawsuit "for violations of New York consumer protection laws and unjust enrichment. They are seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial."
