The University of Pennsylvania layed off a total of 300 positions in their Penn Medicine health system at the end of March, 2025 according to ABC 6.

The health system says this is a choice of strategy to be able to keep Penn Medicine afloat while adjusting to the rising costs in healthcare, even though 100 of the positions were either losing personnel to retirement or vacant.

Currently, Penn Medicine runs a few hospitals including Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and the nation's first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital as stated by their Penn Medicine website. They are also the home to a large network of "outpatient centers, specialty practces, and research facilities".

A spokesperson for Penn Medicine shared to Healthcaredive.com that “like other health systems across the United States, Penn Medicine is working to ensure strong financial footing while growing care for more patients across the region...The position eliminations will not result in discontinuation of any patient care services or programs.”
