It is consistently questioned how to avoid animal testing for products that we put on our skin daily. Trialing products on something as close to the human skin as possible, will give the most accurate results.

Introducing an innovation that is growing amongst brands, but cosmetic company L'Oréal is leading the way with using 3D printed skin.

Formlabs says that 3D printing is utilized more than we might think in our everyday lives. Currently 3D printing technologies are used in a number of industries, including "including aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and consumer goods".

In March of 2024 at the Viva Technology conference in Paris, L'Oréal debuted their "bioprinting" tool that makes 3D skin. According to CNBC, the company's tech incubator Guive Balooch says they "ceased testing its products on animals back in 1989, long before it was required by regulation."

Balooch continues by saying the “ability to use 3D printing with biology to reconstruct skin in personalized ways adjusting for a fully inclusive set of actual reconstructed skin...This is going to be a revolution, too. We’re doing it internally but also working with external partners as well."

The future looks bright at L'Oreal with a model in the works that will actually feel senses like humans do. Anne Debauge, Digital Manager of Packaging and Development at L’Oréal, shares with Ultimaker that “we want to move to a beauty-tech company...with 3D printing, we will go through huge new experiences of beauty for all our consumers.”

The opportunities for 3D printing are exciting across any industry, and will continue to uplevel practices across the board.
