A Warm Shower Before Bed Might Be The Key to a Better Night's Sleep - Study Suggests

If a warm shower helps you unwind before bed, and even makes you feel sleepier, science may validate your feelings. According to a University of Texas at Austin study conducted in 2019, taking that warm bath or shower may actually correlate to how quickly you fall asleep.

The researchers used systematic review protocols, a method that allowed them to review "thousands of studies" to dive deeper into how temperature of water work hand in hand to give a better night's sleep.

"Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering found that bathing 1-2 hours before bedtime in water of about 104-109 degrees Fahrenheit can significantly improve your sleep."

Why does this work?

Healthline.com says "taking a warm bath enhances blood circulation to your hands and feet, facilitating the release of body heat. This subsequent drop in core temperature mirrors the body's natural cooling process at night, promoting drowsiness and aiding in the transition to sleep."

When Should I Shower/Bathe?

Timing may be the most important aspect of this process, to maximize the results. ScienceDaily shares that "research indicates that taking a warm bath approximately 90 minutes before bedtime can help the body cool down, facilitating a quicker and more restful transition into sleep."

With a world of "quick fixes", this could be a good opportunity to better your sleep cycle in a natural way.
