Is dark chocolate really helpful for cognitive function? Science says that one component found in dark chocolate might give you an extra boost of brain power.
According to, Enhancing Human Cognition with Cocoa Flavonoids, research conducted back in 2017 to find that it's not exactly the chocolate making your brain work effectviely, it's actually flavonol.
Rob Shmerling's Harvard Health Blog describes a flavonol as a "plant-based substances that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects." MedicalNewsToday.com shares that flavonol is found in cocoa, vegetables, tea, and fruit.
More research shows that "Long-term consumption may be helpful," Shmerling continues, "One 2014 study found that among adults ages 50 to 69, those taking a cocoa supplement with high flavonol content for three months had better performance on tests of memory than those assigned to take a low-flavonol cocoa supplement."
However, dark chocolate itself does have qualities that are actually beneficial to your health. It is considered nutritious with vitamins like magnesium, copper, iron, and fiber. Sources like Healthline.com reveal that "A review of studies revealed that eating chocolate 3 times per week lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 9%." It can protect your skin from the sun, lower cholesterol levels, and even reduce the risk of dementia in older adults.
What can we take away from this? Chocolate may not be nutritious, but without fillers it could have some unexpected health benefits.
