China has introduced a breakthrough in artificial intelligence in the medical field with the first-ever AI hospital.

Researchers from the Tsinghua University in Beijing have developed the world's first "Agent Hospital," a virtual healthcare facility where all doctors and nurses are artificial intelligence agents, powered by a large language model (LLM). These virtual professionals are capable of autonomous interaction, the Global Times reported.

Currently, the hospital has 14 AI doctors who are designed to diagnose diseases and formulate treatment plans. There are also four AI nurses in charge of supporting doctors and patients daily.

These intelligent agents evolve as they work on simulated health cases in different virtual consultation and examination rooms to achieve real-world applications.

Real doctors and medical students can also practice diagnosis and treatments risk-free through simulation training. Patients, on the other hand, can be treated by virtual doctors through online consultation.

"Evolved" AI health practitioners have even scored an impressive 93.06 percent accuracy on a series of US Medical Licensing Exam questions.

"Agent Hospital" will be able to treat an impressive 10,000 patients in just days -- something that human doctors would take over two years to achieve, the outlet pointed out.

However, while the concept is promising, research team leader Liu Yang admits hurdles in medical regulation and AI-human collaboration are challenges her team faces.

Nonetheless, Agent Hospital hopes to start operating this year.
