NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade revealed that he underwent surgery in December 2023 to remove a cancerous tumor from his right kidney.

The 43-year-old former Miami Heat star shared details of his health journey on a recent episode of his podcast, “The Why With Dwyane Wade.” Wade recounted that after retiring from professional basketball, he became less diligent about regular health check-ups. However, due to a family history of prostate cancer—his father battled the disease—he decided to undergo a comprehensive medical examination after experiencing symptoms such as stomach issues, cramps, and a weakened urine stream.

During a full-body scan, doctors discovered a tumor on his right kidney.

“Because I did the full-body scan, they were able to see my entire body, my entire inside, and they were able to see something that was on my kidney—on my right kidney,” Wade explained.

"That moment was probably the weakest point I've ever felt in my life...I was struggling, dawg. Struggling. And one thing you never want to do as a man is you never want your family to see you as weak."

In December 2023, Wade underwent surgery to remove the tumor, resulting in the removal of 40% of his right kidney. Tests found that the tumor was cancerous.

"In that process of weakness, I found strength in my family," he said.

Wade, inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, led the Heat to their first NBA championship in 2006, earning the Finals MVP award. He had two additional championships in 2012 and 2013 alongside LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Over his 16-year career, he was a 13-time NBA All-Star and the 2009 NBA scoring champion.

He is married to actress Gabrielle Union and has four children: Zaire, Zaya, Xavier, and Kaavia.
