The human voice is more than just a tool for communication. It is a bridge between the body and the soul, a mechanism for healing, and a means to reclaim personal power. Maryn Azoff, founder of the Vocal Transformation Method, is on a mission to remind humanity of its intrinsic vocal abilities. Azoff sat down with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, for an interview for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed,” and shared her insights on how the voice is not just for speaking or singing but is an essential part of self-healing, empowerment, and human connection.

The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. Stemming from the success of Biohack Yourself, TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli have grown Biohack Yourself Media to become the number one resource for health news, publishing over 500 articles ranging from breaking news to peer reviewed content.

The Birthright of Vocal Expression

Azoff explains that from the moment we are born, we inherently use our voice as a survival mechanism. The first cry of an infant is not just an indication of life but also an essential way for the body and soul to integrate. This primal instinct continues throughout life, though many lose touch with it due to societal conditioning.

"Every human being has the ability to use their voice instinctively. But as we grow, we start suppressing this natural expression," Azoff notes. She highlights how babies have no inhibitions in vocalizing their needs, yet as they develop, external influences begin shaping their thoughts and expressions, often leading to insecurity around their own voice.

The Role of Vocal Transformation

The Vocal Transformation Method is a structured yet deeply intuitive approach to reconnecting with the voice as a healing tool. Azoff clarifies that this method is not exclusively for singers. "In fact, anyone can practice it, regardless of musical training. The voice is a biological instrument designed to express energy and emotion," she says.

Her method incorporates ancient wisdom and vocal techniques, focusing on breathwork, frequency modulation, and chakra alignment. Through specific chanting and toning exercises, individuals can reestablish their connection with their voice and unlock healing potential within their body.

The Science Behind the Voice

Azoff ties her practice to both ancient teachings and modern science. She emphasizes the role of the vagus nerve, a critical component of the autonomic nervous system, which connects the brain to various organs, including the vocal cords.

"Humming is one of the simplest ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and shift the body from a state of stress to relaxation," she explains. According to her, this is why mothers instinctively hum to soothe their babies and why individuals often hum to self-soothe in stressful situations. Vocalization stimulates the vagus nerve, promoting physical and emotional healing.

Chakras and Vocal Healing

Azoff delves into the chakra system, particularly how vocalization aligns energy centers within the body. The throat chakra, often associated with self-expression and truth, is a key component of her teachings.

"When we speak or sing with full breath support, we are not just using our vocal cords. We are engaging an entire system of nerve pathways that affect every organ in the body," she states.

The method includes chanting practices that move energy from the root chakra (the base of the spine) to the crown chakra (top of the head). By harmonizing these energy centers, individuals can experience profound physical and emotional transformations.

Breaking the Cycle of Insecurity

Many people suffer from insecurity regarding their voice, often stemming from childhood experiences where they were silenced or discouraged from expressing themselves. Azoff believes that this suppression leads to deeper issues, including emotional blockages and even physical ailments.

"Our thoughts are largely influenced by external factors. We are conditioned to fit into societal molds, which stifle our natural instincts. But when we reconnect with our voice, we reclaim our power," she says.

She encourages people to embrace their voice, not just as a means of communication but as a fundamental aspect of their identity and well-being.

Vocal Transformation and Women’s Empowerment

Azoff sees vocal transformation as particularly crucial for women, many of whom have historically been silenced or stripped of their confidence. She shares her own story of overcoming personal trauma through vocal expression, emphasizing how reclaiming one’s voice can be a gateway to self-empowerment.

"Women are the creators of life. Our voices carry the power of regeneration. Yet, for generations, we have been conditioned to remain quiet, to suppress our true power. But when we reclaim our voice, we heal not only ourselves but our ancestral lineage and future generations," she asserts.

She mentions the importance of vocal work in pregnancy and childbirth, stating that chanting and vocal toning can help mothers establish a deeper connection with their unborn child and even clear epigenetic trauma.

The Connection Between Voice and Healing

Beyond empowerment, Azoff has witnessed vocal transformation aiding in physical and emotional healing. She has worked with individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, autoimmune disorders, and even fertility struggles, observing profound improvements through vocal practice.

"Sound is a frequency, and frequency moves energy. When we use our voice with intention, we can shift stagnant energy and facilitate healing at a cellular level," she explains.

Her work also intersects with indigenous practices. She draws from her experiences with Peruvian mestizo shamanism and plant medicine ceremonies, where chanting plays a central role in healing and spiritual awakening.

Reimagining Aging and Self-Perception

Azoff challenges the conventional understanding of aging, suggesting that much of the deterioration associated with growing older is a result of ingrained belief systems rather than biological inevitability.

"Every seven years, our body regenerates itself. So why do we believe that we must deteriorate with age? These are learned beliefs that we can change," she says.

Through vocal practices, individuals can maintain vitality, enhance mental clarity, and sustain physical well-being, proving that the mind and body are deeply interconnected.

Bringing Vocal Transformation to the World

Azoff offers various formats for individuals to engage with her work, including live sessions, online courses, and workshops. Her goal is to make vocal transformation accessible to all, regardless of background or experience.

She passionately states, "The voice is the most powerful instrument we possess. It is our birthright to use it fully. When we do, we step into our true essence, reclaim our power, and heal not just ourselves but the world around us."

As more people embrace this ancient yet revolutionary practice, the potential for personal and collective transformation becomes limitless. Through vocal transformation, we can return to the essence of who we truly are and harness our voice as a tool for healing, connection, and empowerment.
