For too long, women’s health has been overlooked, misdiagnosed, or dismissed by conventional medicine. But Dr. Rajka Milanovic Galbraith, a family medicine and functional medicine MD, is on a mission to change that. Through her holistic and science-backed approach, she empowers women to reclaim their vitality, optimize their health, and thrive well into old age.
In an eye-opening interview with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed,” Dr. Rajka shared her personal health struggles, insights into functional medicine, and practical steps for women to regain control over their well-being.
The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. A Personal Journey to Functional Medicine
Dr. Rajka’s passion for women’s health stems from her own battles with fatigue and chronic illness. “My journey started with extreme exhaustion in my 20s, 30s, and 40s,” she recalled. Despite being a doctor, she found herself diagnosed with one condition after another, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. “But no one ever asked why it happened in the first place,” she explained.
Things took a turn for the worse when she developed severe liver dysfunction in her 40s. “I was on a trip with my children, and instead of enjoying their laughter, I was terrified that I wouldn’t live to see them grow up,” she said. Determined to change her fate, she turned to functional medicine. “A colleague prescribed a precise protocol, and I reversed my failing liver,” she revealed. “Now, I’ve helped thousands of women do the same, and with my book, Energized: Feel Fantastic Forever, my goal is to change millions of lives.”
The Root Causes of Women’s Health Issues
Through years of research and practice, Dr. Rajka has identified eight key root causes of disease, which she sums up with the acronym STAINS:
S – Sleep and stress
T – Toxins
A – Adverse or inflammatory foods (like gluten and dairy)
I – Infections and microbiome imbalances
N – Nutrient deficiencies
S – Sedentary lifestyle or isolation
If she had to pinpoint the most common culprits, she’d focus on stress, toxins, and poor diet. “Women are exposed to more toxins than ever before,” she said. “We’re born nutrient-deficient because of depleted soil and poor dietary habits. And chronic stress depletes essential vitamins and minerals even further.”

How Functional Medicine Empowers Women
Unlike conventional medicine, which often treats symptoms in isolation, functional medicine digs deeper. “The traditional approach is to prescribe Prozac for depression, birth control for hormonal imbalances, or surgery for persistent pain,” Dr. Rajka explained. “But these don’t address the underlying issue.”
In contrast, functional medicine evaluates hormone levels, nutritional deficiencies, gut health, and toxin exposure to create personalized healing plans. “We give women the tools to restore balance naturally,” she said. “It’s about precision, not guesswork.”
The Epidemic of Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Dr. Rajka is particularly concerned about mitochondrial dysfunction, which she calls “the root of chronic fatigue.” Mitochondria, the energy factories of our cells, are inherited from mothers. “If you’re constantly tired, blame your mom,” she joked. But on a serious note, she warned that toxins, stress, and poor nutrition destroy mitochondria, leading to chronic illness.
“This cycle is getting worse with each generation,” she cautioned. “Glyphosates, endocrine disruptors, and environmental toxins are making children sicker from birth.” She urges prospective parents to seek functional medicine guidance at least three months before conception. “We can break the cycle by optimizing health before pregnancy,” she said.
How to Know When You Need Help
Women often dismiss symptoms like fatigue, irritability, or weight gain as “normal.” But Dr. Rajka warns against ignoring these signs. “If you wake up feeling exhausted, struggle with brain fog, or feel like you’re running on empty, something is wrong,” she stressed.
She encourages partners and family members to be vigilant. “Husbands often notice the changes before women do,” she noted. “If your wife seems constantly drained or not herself, it’s time to seek help.”
Restorative Strategies for Women’s Health
So what can women do to restore their health? Dr. Rajka recommends three powerful yet simple strategies:
Regulate Your Stress Response
Chronic stress accelerates aging and disease. Her patients use biofeedback devices to monitor and train their bodies to shift out of fight-or-flight mode.
Meditation, deep breathing, and gratitude journaling are essential. “Living in the gain—focusing on what you have, not what you lack—can shift your entire biology,” she said.
Balance Your Hormones and Nutrients
Optimize thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones under the guidance of a functional medicine doctor.
Address nutrient deficiencies. “I used to see 3-5 deficiencies per patient. Now I see 8-10,” she warned.
Avoid inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, and processed sugar.
Lay the Foundation Before Trying Advanced Therapies
Whether it’s weight loss drugs, regenerative medicine, or hormone therapy, results depend on a strong foundation. “If you don’t fix digestion, metabolism, and detox pathways first, these treatments won’t work,” she explained.

The Future of Women’s Health
Dr. Rajka is optimistic about the future of functional and regenerative medicine. “For decades, research was focused on men. That’s finally changing,” she said. “Women are starting to demand better healthcare.”
She hopes to see more doctors trained in functional medicine, bioidentical hormone therapy, and anti-aging strategies. “We need a paradigm shift where women feel heard, respected, and empowered to make informed decisions about their bodies,” she stated.
What Future Generations Need to Know
Dr. Rajka’s final message was a call to action: educate and empower the next generation. “If you’re a mother or grandmother, start teaching healthy habits early,” she urged.
She shared the story of a 27-year-old patient who sought functional medicine before trying to conceive. “She thought she was healthy, but we found 17 nutrient deficiencies and fatty liver disease—all without symptoms,” she said. “Within six weeks of treatment, she felt better than ever. That’s the power of prevention.”

A New Era of Women’s Health
Dr. Rajka Milanovic Galbraith is at the forefront of a health revolution. Through her expertise in functional medicine, nutrigenetics, and anti-aging strategies, she’s giving women the tools to thrive at every stage of life.
“No woman should accept fatigue, pain, or hormonal chaos as ‘normal,’” she emphasized. “With the right approach, you can wake up energized, live fully, and feel fantastic—at any age.”
For those seeking a roadmap to vibrant health, Dr. Rajka’s message is clear: take charge, seek answers, and never settle for anything less than optimal well-being.
