Dr. Betty Murray, a Ph.D. researcher, certified nutritionist, and functional medicine expert, is on a mission to revolutionize women’s health, hormone balance, and longevity. As a leader in functional and precision medicine, she believes that women over 40 have been ignored by conventional healthcare for too long. Dr. Murray sat down with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, for an interview for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed,” to share insights on gut health, hormone optimization, telemedicine, and the future of personalized healthcare.

The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. Stemming from the success of Biohack Yourself, TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli have grown Biohack Yourself Media to become the number one resource for health news, publishing over 500 articles ranging from breaking news to peer reviewed content.

From Corporate America to Functional Medicine Pioneer

Murray’s journey into health and wellness began with her own health crisis. While working long hours in the tech industry, she was diagnosed with colitis, an autoimmune digestive disorder. When she asked her doctor if diet could help, she was laughed at.

"That moment changed everything," Murray recalled. "I knew there had to be a better way. So I went back to school, earned my Master’s in Nutrition, and never looked back."

She spent three years in night school, while still working full-time, determined to find the missing link in medicine. That passion led her to co-found Living Well Dallas Functional Medicine Center in 2006, one of the first clinics in the country to integrate functional medicine, nutrition, and holistic health under one roof.

Why Women’s Health Has Been Overlooked

Murray is frustrated by the lack of medical research on women. "Women were excluded from clinical trials until 1993," she explained. "Even today, only 6% of medical research funding goes toward women’s health. That’s unacceptable."

She believes this oversight has led to misdiagnosis and mistreatment for millions of women. "Women in their 40s and 50s are often told, ‘You’re just getting older,’ or ‘It’s all in your head.’ But the truth is, hormonal shifts, gut health, and inflammation are driving their symptoms."

The Gut-Hormone Connection: Why Fixing Digestion is Key

One of Murray’s biggest discoveries is the link between gut health and hormone balance. "Your gut microbiome controls how your body metabolizes estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. If your gut is inflamed, your hormones will be out of balance."

She explained that many women struggling with weight gain, brain fog, anxiety, and fatigue often have an underlying gut issue, such as:

  • Leaky gut syndrome (which allows toxins to enter the bloodstream)

  • Poor digestion (which prevents proper nutrient absorption)

  • Dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria)

Her approach? Fix the gut first. "I always start with stool testing, because if your body isn’t digesting food properly, you’re not getting the nutrients you need to support your hormones."

Hormone Optimization: Breaking the Myths About HRT

Murray is a strong advocate for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)—but she believes most women are given the wrong information.

"The 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study scared an entire generation away from hormone therapy, but the study was deeply flawed. Now, we know that bioidentical hormones can protect against heart disease, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline."

Her recommendation? "Don’t let fear keep you from getting the help you need."

She encourages women to get comprehensive lab testing to assess their:

  • Estrogen metabolism

  • Progesterone levels

  • Testosterone balance

  • Cortisol and stress response

"Your hormones are not the enemy. When balanced correctly, they help you age powerfully, stay lean, and feel vibrant."

Telemedicine & The Future of Personalized Healthcare

Murray is a pioneer in telemedicine and digital health. Through her platform Minerva, she is bringing precision medicine to women everywhere.

"Most women don’t realize they can get advanced lab testing, hormone therapy, and gut health protocols—without ever stepping into a doctor’s office," she said. "We can send phlebotomists to your home, analyze your data remotely, and create a customized health plan—all from the comfort of your home."

She believes telemedicine is the future of healthcare: "Instead of relying on one-size-fits-all treatments, we can now use AI, genetic testing, and real-time data to create truly personalized health solutions."

How Women Can Take Control of Their Health Today

Murray wants every woman to feel empowered, not confused, when it comes to her health. "Start with the basics," she said. "Before you try biohacking, peptides, or high-tech solutions, focus on these key areas:**

  1. Optimize Your Gut Health: "If you’re bloated, constipated, or dealing with food sensitivities, get a stool test and start healing your gut."

  2. Strength Train & Eat Enough Protein: "Muscle is the currency of aging. Women need more protein and resistance training—not more cardio."

  3. Balance Blood Sugar: "Stop eating low-fat, high-carb diets. They spike insulin and lead to weight gain. Focus on healthy fats, fiber, and protein."

  4. Address Hormone Imbalances: "If you’re struggling with fatigue, mood swings, or weight gain, get functional lab testing. Your hormones may need support."

  5. Reduce Toxin Exposure: "Switch to clean beauty, non-toxic cookware, and filtered water to reduce your chemical burden."

Midlife is Just the Beginning

At 55, Murray says she feels better than she did at 35. "This is the best time of your life. You can get stronger, feel more confident, and reclaim your energy—but you have to take control of your health."

She wants women to know that aging doesn’t mean slowing down. "You are not broken. You are not powerless. With the right information, you can age powerfully, not passively."

Through her clinic, research, and Minerva platform, Dr. Betty Murray is proving that women’s health is not an afterthought—it’s the future of medicine.
