Dr. Amie Hornaman, widely known as "The Thyroid Fixer," has dedicated her career to helping women reclaim their health through proper thyroid and hormone optimization. As an expert in functional medicine, she understands the frustration that comes with undiagnosed thyroid conditions and hormonal imbalances. Dr. Hornaman sat down with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, for an interview for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed,” to share her personal journey, the science behind thyroid health, and why so many women struggle to get the right diagnosis and treatment.

The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. Stemming from the success of Biohack Yourself, TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli have grown Biohack Yourself Media to become the number one resource for health news, publishing over 500 articles ranging from breaking news to peer reviewed content.

A Personal Battle with Thyroid Dysfunction

Dr. Hornaman's passion for thyroid health is deeply personal. She was once a fitness competitor and fitness model, meticulously following strict diet and exercise regimens. "I knew my body inside and out," she explained. But during preparation for a major competition, something went horribly wrong.

"I was doing everything right—eating clean, training twice a day, following the same regimen I always had. But instead of losing weight, I kept gaining," she recalled. "At first, it was five pounds, then ten, then twenty-five. Eventually, I stopped weighing myself. I knew something was wrong."

Like many women, Dr. Hornaman sought medical help, only to be dismissed. "I went to six different doctors. They all told me the same thing: 'You're normal. Just eat less and exercise more.' But I knew I wasn't normal. My body was rebelling."

Finally, after relentless searching, she found a functional medicine practitioner who took the time to listen and run the right tests. "He sat with me for 90 minutes, ordered comprehensive labs, and finally diagnosed me with Hashimoto's—a condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid." With the right treatment, she lost the weight, regained her energy, and found her calling: helping other women avoid the same frustrating medical journey.

The Thyroid’s Critical Role in Health

Dr. Hornaman emphasizes that the thyroid is the "master gland" of the body. "It controls metabolism, energy, mood, digestion, and even hair growth. If your thyroid is underactive, everything slows down—your weight loss, digestion, and even brain function. That’s why I say: fix your thyroid, fix your life."

One of the biggest myths she debunks is that thyroid dysfunction is rare. "Millions of women suffer from undiagnosed thyroid problems. If you’re constantly tired, struggling to lose weight, losing hair, or feeling depressed, your thyroid could be the culprit."

In an effort to help her patients see results and thrive, Dr. Hornaman created the FIXXR supplement line to specifically target the most common symptoms she sees in her practice, like weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, low libido, and brain fog and to tackle issues like insulin resistance, and dry skin.

Why Women Struggle to Get Diagnosed

One of the biggest barriers to proper thyroid treatment is the reliance on outdated testing methods. "Most conventional doctors only test TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and maybe T4," Dr. Hornaman explained. "But that doesn’t give the full picture. We need to check Free T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies to truly understand what’s happening."

She warns that many women are misdiagnosed—or completely ignored. "Women are often told their symptoms are due to aging, stress, or depression. In reality, they have a hormonal imbalance that can be corrected."

The Link Between Thyroid and Weight Loss

A common misconception is that weight gain is simply about diet and exercise. "Yes, calories matter, but hormones determine how your body burns those calories," Dr. Hornaman said. "If your thyroid is slow, your metabolism is slow. You could be doing everything right and still not lose weight."

She also addressed the common excuse: "It’s my thyroid." "People think thyroid issues mean inevitable weight gain, but that’s not true. If you get the right treatment and optimize your thyroid function, you can lose weight. It’s about finding the right approach."

Treatment Options: Medication and Natural Solutions

When it comes to thyroid treatment, Dr. Hornaman takes an individualized approach. "Some women can manage symptoms through diet and lifestyle changes, but many need thyroid hormone replacement. And that’s okay!"

She explained the difference between conventional and functional medicine treatments:

  • Traditional Medicine: Most doctors prescribe T4-only medications like Synthroid or Levothyroxine. "But only 2% of people do well on T4 alone," she said. "Most need a combination of T4 and T3."

  • Functional Medicine: "We look at bio-individuality—what does your body need? Some women do best on natural desiccated thyroid (NDT), others on compounded thyroid medication. It’s not one-size-fits-all."

She also discussed the role of T2, a lesser-known thyroid hormone metabolite. "T2 increases resting metabolic rate and helps burn fat without the negative feedback loop of T3. It’s a powerful tool for weight loss and energy."

Why Hormone Replacement Therapy Matters

Dr. Hornaman is a vocal advocate for hormone replacement therapy (HRT), particularly for women over 40. "We’ve been misled into fearing hormones, but they are essential for longevity. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone protect against Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease."

She points to the debunked Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study, which wrongly linked HRT to cancer risks. "That study scared a generation of women away from hormone therapy, but we now know it was flawed. Bioidentical hormones are safe and essential for aging well."

Actionable Steps for Women

Dr. Hornaman encourages women to take charge of their health with these steps:

  1. Get Comprehensive Testing: "Demand a full thyroid panel: TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies."

  2. Consider Thyroid Optimization: "If you have symptoms, find a practitioner who understands functional medicine. Don’t settle for ‘normal’ if you don’t feel normal."

  3. Balance All Hormones: "Thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone work together. If one is off, the others will be too."

  4. Reduce Inflammation: "Gluten, sugar, and processed foods can trigger autoimmune reactions and worsen thyroid function."

  5. Support Your Metabolism: "Consider T2 supplements to increase energy and fat-burning without harming your thyroid."

  6. Advocate for Yourself: "If your doctor dismisses your concerns, find a new doctor. You know your body better than anyone."

Reclaim Your Health

Dr. Hornaman’s final message is one of empowerment: "You are not crazy. You are not lazy. If you feel off, there is a reason, and there is a solution. Don’t stop until you find answers."

She urges women to trust their intuition. "If your doctor says ‘you’re fine’ but you know something’s wrong, keep looking. There are practitioners out there who will listen and help you heal."

Through her work, Dr. Amie Hornaman is giving women the tools and knowledge to reclaim their health—proving that when you fix your thyroid, you truly fix your life.
