Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he spends his 10th day in the hospital for a lung infection that has now progressed to early-stage kidney "insufficiency."

On Monday, the Vatican reported that the pontiff had a restful Sunday evening at Rome's Gemelli Hospital despite battling a complex case of pneumonia.

"The night passed well, the pope slept and is resting," the Vatican said in a statement, per Vatican News.

Francis, 88, has been in the hospital since February 14, receiving treatment for pneumonia in both his lungs. He has also received blood transfusions for low hemoglobin.

On Sunday, the Catholic church admitted that Francis remains in critical condition. Doctors have also seen signs of "mild renal insufficiency" following blood tests.

"The thrombocytopenia remains stable; however, some blood tests show early, mild renal insufficiency, which is currently under control," the Vatican said.

As a young man, the pope had a part of his lung removed after a pulmonary infection which has left him prone to bronchitis, the NPR reported.

While his situation remains unstable, Pope Francis was reportedly alert and responsive on Sunday and had attended mass.

Healthy adults suffering from pneumonia, including double pneumonia, have relatively high survival rates. However, the mortality rate increases in patients 85 years and older stands at 29.7%, a previous study found.

Age-related changes, weakened immune systems, and pre-existing health conditions can also exacerbate the severity of pneumonia in seniors.
