It turns out oat milk is not the healthier option.
Dietitians are reportedly raising concerns over a chemical found in some plant-based milk brands that could be linked to tumor growth and cancer, the Daily Mail UK reported.
Glyphosate, which is reportedly found in a lot of popular oat milk brands, is an herbicide used to kill most plants and manage plant growth. It is one of the U.S.'s most popular herbicides, according to WebMD, and is being used in home gardening and agriculture.
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the chemical as "probably carcinogenic to humans."
Despite these alarming facts about glyphosate, it remains a popular ingredient in a lot of oat-based products.
A 2023 research by the Environmental Working Group showed that while levels of the toxic chemical in popular oat-based products like cereals and instant oatmeal have dropped, it remains present in these food items.
A separate test done by the non-profit Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Programs found that two popular oat milk brands had certain levels of the contaminants.
"One exposure would be fine, but daily exposure is concerning," Linda Birnbaum, scientist emeritus and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program, told EHN.org.
Many health influencers have also pointed out how certain ingredients of oat milk cause blood sugar levels to spike.
A separate WebMD article also pointed out that oat milk only offers half the proteins cow milk has and does not have some essential amino acids that the body needs.
In a recent interview, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also pointed out how "a thousand ingredients" found in popular US food products are found illegal in other countries.
"We're poisoning this whole generation," RFK said.
All these studies show how important it is to know what's in the food you eat.
