Revolutionary At-Home Bladder Cancer Test Achieves 88.8% Accuracy, Makes Early Detection Easier

A groundbreaking urine-based diagnostic kit for bladder cancer has been unveiled, allowing patients to test themselves at home with ease.

The research team, led by Dr. Youngdo Jeong of the Center for Advanced Biomolecular Recognition at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), in collaboration with Professor Seok-Ho Kang’s team from Korea University College of Medicine, developed the urine-based kit to simplify early detection and improve accessibility for individuals at risk of bladder cancer.

The innovation offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional diagnostic methods like cystoscopy and lab tests, which are often uncomfortable and require visits to medical facilities. The kit can identify bladder cancer biomarkers in urine using water and oil layering to detect them with high precision.

According to the research, it employs a mechanism where a biomarker-bonded film breaks, releasing a buoyant signal carrier into the oil layer, and emitting a detectable signal. This design prevents interference from impurities like hematuria and amplifies the signal for accurate detection.

In clinical trials with 80 patients and 25 healthy individuals, it achieved 88.8% sensitivity, far surpassing the 20% of existing commercial tests, and effectively detected early-stage bladder cancer, which traditional methods often miss.

According to data from the American Cancer Society, in the U.S., an estimated 84,870 new cases will be diagnosed in 2025, with about 17,420 resulting in death.

Data from the National Cancer Institute also shows about 48.4% of bladder cancers are diagnosed at a very early stage, while 35.1% are identified when the cancer is still confined to the bladder. Only 4.9% of cases are detected after the cancer has spread to distant tissues.

Early detection is crucial in improving survival rates for bladder cancer patients, and the new kit is designed to make the process more accessible and patient-friendly.

Researchers hope the convenience of at-home testing will encourage more people to undergo regular screening, leading to earlier interventions.

The researchers plan to establish a startup focusing on the mass production and commercialization of the bladder cancer test kit.
