Dr. Thomas Cowan is a physician whose journey through medicine has been anything but conventional. Playing basketball and golf growing up, his early aspirations did not include becoming a doctor. However, after attending Duke University, where he couldn't find another path that resonated with him, he pursued medicine.

He sat down with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli for the Biohack Yourself Documentary and explained that his perspective on health dramatically shifted during his time in the Peace Corps in Africa, where he learned about farming and encountered the works of Rudolf Steiner and Weston Price. These authors introduced him to the idea that food is fundamental to health and opened his eyes to alternative medical philosophies beyond the conventional paradigm he had encountered in medical school.

“[The works] essentially told me that the kind of doctor I didn't want to be was not the only kind of doctor there was,” he said in the Biohack Yourself Documentary. “These were talking about how food is health and there's a whole different way of looking at the world. And at that point it was like the flood gate opened and I said this is what I can do.”

After completing medical training, including an internship and a brief residency, Cowan spent 37 years practicing family medicine in New Hampshire and San Francisco. Despite feeling disillusioned with traditional medical practices, he embarked on a path of questioning and investigation. This led him to challenge widely accepted medical beliefs, culminating in his controversial views on topics such as heart function, vaccines, and cancer genetics.

“I went to medical school and just started learning the way, started trying to investigate what is true and what isn't true,” Dr. Cowan said in the Biohack Yourself Documentary.

Cowan's books, including "The Fourfold Path to Healing" and "Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness," have stirred significant debate within the medical community and beyond. He argues against mainstream narratives on issues like the efficacy of vaccines and the causes of heart disease, advocating instead for a more holistic approach to health.

“Even though we've had a 50-year war on cancer and spent $100 trillion and essentially gotten nowhere,” he explained in the documentary. “And that's why it's important, because if you're spending the money, as you know, I think, on a theory that's fundamentally bogus, the prediction is you will get nowhere, which is exactly what happened.”

His message resonates with a global audience seeking alternative perspectives on health and wellness.

Cowan's approach incorporates a variety of biohacking techniques and alternative therapies, emphasizing the role of food, water, and natural substances in health. He discusses the importance of high-quality food, stating, "You've got to eat good food that's properly grown and part of your season and part of your environment, or you're going to get sick. That's just the human story."

He also highlights the significance of structured water and its role in health, mentioning, "When you get down to what are we made of, we're made of minerals ions in water that are organized so you can use sea water that's in a vortex to help a lot of things."

Cowan's interest in biohacking extends to technologies like Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy, noting, "The electromagnetic field is weak. You can prove that if you put a cell phone on a human body, it destructures the water, which is essentially what the electromagnetic field does. It organizes the water so it can create this electromagnetic field. You put somebody in a PEMF thing to charge them up and they feel better."

He is also critical of conventional understandings of mitochondrial function and ATP, explaining, "The mitochondria make ATP, which by the way, is not energy, no matter how many alternative doctors will tell you that ATP is the energy current."

Cowan’s work also touches on the importance of photobiomodulation, red light therapy, and other innovative treatments. He questions widely accepted scientific theories, including those related to genetics and epigenetics, and promotes a more individualized approach to health.

Today, Dr. Cowan continues to challenge the status quo through his writing, speaking engagements, and online platforms. He encourages individuals to critically examine existing medical dogmas and explore holistic alternatives that prioritize natural healing and individual choice. His work aims to empower people to take control of their health in a rapidly changing world.
