HOW THE SCIENCE OF LIGHT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
And the story of the young entrepreneur who made blue light blocking protection glasses premium, science-based, and cool

We’re living in a world different from what our parents grew up in. Everything about our lives is connected to a screen, whether it’s our work, social connection, or just mundane life aspects like making payments for grocery shopping (and grocery shopping itself!). The negative effects of artificial blue light on our health and disruption of our circadian rhythm because of it is not a problem generations before us had considered at all.
Before Ra Optics was conceptualised, Matt Maruca had spent years in high school navigating a range of health issues that many of us can commonly and unfortunately relate to—gut problems, debilitating headaches, allergies, and chronic fatigue. As is the case with many of us in the biohacking space, western and eastern medicine, modern diets, and countless supplements failed to help him. It was in 2017, when he was still in high school, that Matt learnt about mitochondrial science and his eyes finally opened up to the real problem: the influence of light exposure on mitochondrial health.
Mitochondria, the powerhouse of our cells, are electromagnetic. This means their abilities are deeply influenced by light exposure—this makes sense when we take into account the influence of sunlight on our body’s functioning and natural rhythms as well. Poor mitochondrial function is the root of many modern chronic diseases due to a systemic imbalance of natural light exposure during the day and increased artificial light exposure at night.
This excess artificial blue light, abundant in the screens that we can’t seem to live without, tricks our brain into thinking it’s still daytime, which further suppresses melatonin production.
A lack of adequate levels of melatonin leads to compromised sleep quality, preventing our body from repairing the mitochondria efficiently. Overtime, this leads to a vicious cycle of poor health.
Avoiding artificial blue light at night wasn’t an option for Maruca, as it isn’t for most of us. While it’s easy to advise switching off devices after sunset, our tech-driven world often demands otherwise. From finishing work and homework to connecting with loved ones or catching up on the day’s news, eliminating nighttime blue light is rarely feasible. Existing blue light blockers were a decent start but their science was not as well thought out as it should have been. As a dedicated student and budding entrepreneur, the bulky, unattractive designs of all the other existing brands in the market prompted him to design blue-light blocking glasses that were effective and stylish.
RA Optics
Stylish anywhere
Ra, the Egyptian god of sun, creation, life and death lends his name to this company with its rigorous attention to scientific detail. In my years of experience, I’ve found very few companies that match the precision and quality that Ra Optics delivers. As the basic premise, the lenses block specific wavelengths of blue light that are most harmful to mitochondrial function and circadian health. But they also go one step further with their daylight and sunset lenses.
Daylight Lenses: These are designed to block wavelengths of light in the 430-450 nanometer range that cause oxidative stress in the eyes due to long working hours. This range is the peak emission range for most screens. The focus with these lenses is on reducing retinal damage and preventing long-term eye strain.
Sunset Lenses: These are darker lenses and designed to block wavelengths of light in the 460-550 nanometer range. This is a critical spectrum that can disrupt melatonin production and interferes with sleep if you are exposed to it closer to sleep hours.

Leading experts in photobiology have been collaborators in this product design supporting Maruca’s vision. Each lens goes through multiple rounds of stress test under intense light conditions to ensure durability and effectiveness. Due to their precision blocking of wavelengths, a Ra Optics lens will give you a superior viewing experience and maintain natural colour perception by allowing only beneficial light through. This is an important differentiator that has made using these lenses on a daily basis so much more comfortable for me as a user.
It’s part of my job to test biohacking products for a living so I’ve really seen it all when it comes to health devices, marketing claims, and disjointed experiences. Ra Optics has been different — I’ve personally noticed an improvement in my sleep quality and overall energy over the last few months of using their products through my wearable tracking. Their stylish frames also make it easier to wear the glasses without compromising my appearance in social and professional settings.

Innovations in light therapy
Most of us don’t pay as much attention to light exposure as we do to our diet and movement even though statistics reveal we spend, on a global average, 6 hours 40 minutes every day on screens. Even if you only start to use screens at the age of 18, that’s almost 17 years of the rest of your life that would be spent on screens! Ra Optics has identified this lack of awareness and insight as the central tenet of the brand. They’re working on educating people about the importance of the right kind of light for our overall health.
Their future innovations in light therapy and general lighting solutions will aim to improve mitochondrial function and overall health with a root-cause approach.
Matt Maruca is a young, thoughtful, and insightful entrepreneur, who caught the biohacking bug quite early in his life — in high school itself! The team’s thoroughness from scientific research to consumer experience makes me confident about betting on them as a frontrunner in biohacking technologies in the years to come. I think Ra Optics should be a staple in your biohacking toolkit as it is now in mine.
