From setting a new world record for living underwater to leveraging his extensive background and unique experiences, Dr. Joseph Dituri is on a mission to revolutionize hyperbaric medicine. Also known as “Dr. Deep Sea,” he has taken his PhD in biomedical engineering and a distinguished 28-year career as a Navy special operations officer to turn his focus to advancing medical science, particularly in traumatic brain injury and hyperbaric medicine.

Dr. Dituri sat down with Anthony Lolli and TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli during the Biohack Yourself documentary and shared that in an extraordinary experiment, he lived underwater for 100 days, conducting a myriad of tests on himself, including blood, urine, and saliva analyses, as well as electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, and pulmonary function tests. This rigorous scientific regimen, which consumed seven to eight hours daily, yielded remarkable results.

“I started at 44, my epigenetic age at the end of 100 days ended up at 34. We're doing something right,” Dr. Dituri said in the Biohack Yourself Documentary. “We're going in the correct direction.”

Hyperbaric medicine involves placing patients in a pressurized chamber where they breathe pure oxygen. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood, promoting healing and recovery from various conditions. While hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is commonly known for treating divers with decompression sickness, its applications extend far beyond this.

Currently, HBOT is approved for 14 medical conditions, including burn injuries, gangrene, and carbon monoxide poisoning. However, Dr. Dituri's research aims to expand these approved uses, exploring HBOT’s potential in treating a wide array of ailments such as autism, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and traumatic brain injuries.

“What I do is the research that brings into light the things that it can help and tries to move it to the on-label column from the off-label column,” Dr. Dituri explained in the documentary.

A critical part of Dr. Dituri's mission is education. He emphasizes that most physicians receive little to no training in hyperbaric medicine during medical school. By teaching specialized courses, he seeks to bridge this knowledge gap, enabling doctors to understand and appreciate the broader applications of HBOT.

“But that's the thing that I wanna do is bring that knowledge forth. I wanna steal the understanding of hyperbaric medicine and the mechanism of action for everybody's brain and get them to understand it,” Dr. Dituri said in the Biohack Yourself Documentary.

Dr. Dituri advocates for natural healing methods that minimize reliance on pharmaceuticals. HBOT, with its ability to enhance oxygen delivery to cells, represents a powerful tool in this approach. The therapy not only supports immediate recovery but also promotes long-term health benefits, such as lengthening telomeres—the protective caps on chromosomes that influence cellular aging and replication.

“This is the anti-aging drug. If you lengthen that telomere, it can make you live longer,” Dr. Dituri noted in the Biohack Yourself Documentary. “If you do hyperbaric medicine 60 times and walk away, you have 30%-33% more telomere length.”

Dr. Dituri offers a comprehensive HBOT program, typically consisting of 60 sessions over three months. Each session lasts 76 minutes, including time to reach the necessary pressure, maintain it, and safely return to normal atmospheric conditions. While the cost of treatment can be substantial, ranging from $250 to $350 per session, the investment in long-term health and well-being can be invaluable. The potential benefits of HBOT have even led to its recognition as a performance-enhancing treatment, with regulations preventing racehorses from undergoing HBOT within 24 hours of a race.

“We've heard a lot about specifically the horses, the competing horses using PEMF mats, detoxing, and all kinds of crazy biohacking,” Dr. Dituri mentioned, highlighting the advanced treatments used in equine sports.

Dr. Dituri's work is driven by a vision of a future where hyperbaric medicine is widely understood and utilized to treat a broad spectrum of conditions naturally and effectively. His research and educational initiatives are paving the way for this future, offering hope for improved health outcomes without the side effects often associated with conventional treatments.
