As a veterinarian deeply invested in the future of animal health, I’ve witnessed firsthand the growing crisis of antibiotic resistance. This isn’t just a distant threat; it’s a reality that’s already affecting our ability to treat infections in both humans and animals. But there is hope! Integrative and alternative medicine offers powerful solutions that could help us navigate this crisis.
The Rise of Antibiotic Resistance
It is predicted that within the next decade, antibiotics may become largely ineffective, leaving people and animals helpless and vulnerable to the consequences of infections. We are already seeing serious infections that have no antibiotic options!
The discovery of antibiotics in 1928 revolutionized modern medicine, earning antibiotics the title of “miracle drugs.” They have been pivotal in treating infectious diseases, enabling major surgeries, organ transplantation, and cancer chemotherapy. However, as Sir Alexander Fleming warned, “the use of antimicrobials can, and will, lead to resistance.” Bacteria are simple and resilient microorganisms capable of evolving rapidly to survive in adverse conditions, including the presence of antibiotics. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of resistant bacteria.
The significant misuse of antibiotics in the animal food industry has also contributed to the selection and transmission of resistant bacteria through the meat supply.
Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria; they have no effect on viruses, fungi, or parasites. Various antibiotics are effective against specific strains of microorganisms, and to know what drug will be effective, a culture and sensitivity test must be performed, otherwise it is an educated “guess” as to which drug to use. Guessing wrong has consequences too. Antibiotics kill more than just the organisms they were intended to affect; they disrupt the trillions of beneficial and necessary microbes that inhabit the intestines and skin resulting in a massive negative impact on the beneficial microbes. These drugs also come with negative side effects, ranging from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, and allergic reactions.

Why Antibiotic Resistance Is A Veterinary Concern
Antibiotics revolutionized modern medicine, saving countless lives. However, the overuse and misuse of these drugs have led to a sobering reality: bacteria are evolving faster than our ability to develop new antibiotics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health and food security.
The implications of antibiotic resistance in veterinary medicine are profound. Common infections that were once easily treatable are becoming more difficult to manage. In severe cases, we are left with limited or no effective options. The consequences of this are far-reaching, impacting not only on the health and welfare of animals but also the safety of the food supply and the well-being of humans.
The Role of Alternative Medicine In Combating Antibiotic Resistance
Amid this growing crisis, alternative and integrative medicine offers safe and effective solutions. With integrative medicine, the practitioner does not stop with suppressing the symptoms. These therapies focus on strengthening the body’s natural defenses, addressing the root causes of illness and reducing the reliance on antibiotics.
There are a variety of alternative therapies that have proven to be safe and effective and may replace the need for antibiotics, steroids, or surgery.
HBOT Therapy Benefits

1. Ozone Therapy: A Natural Antimicrobial Powerhouse
Ozone is a natural product produced by nature in the stratosphere. Lightning strikes oxygen molecules (O2), dividing them into singlet oxygen (O). When they come back together, some become O3, an unstable and reactive molecule. Ozone is also made in our bodies by mitochondria as a byproduct of making energy (ATP). This ozone acts as a redox signaling molecule, helping to transmit information. Ozone gas can be generated by a small machine using a reaction of electricity and oxygen. This ozone can then be used therapeutically in a multitude of safe and effective ways.
How Does Ozone Therapy Work?
Ozone Therapy is a medical treatment that uses activated oxygen to treat many chronic and acute diseases. It increases oxygen levels and utilization, destroys pathogens, and activates the immune system. It is an affordable, safe and effective treatment. Ozone can be administered in many ways:
Intravenously mixed with the patient’s blood.
As a gas infused directly into the rectum, vagina, bladder, or other body cavities.
As a gas injected into a mass, under the skin or into acupuncture points.
The gas can be infused into water or oils for topical administration.
The gas can be bubbled through oils, changing the properties and making it safe to breathe.

2. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Enhancing Immune Function
Our body’s tissues need oxygen to function. The air we breathe is 21% oxygen. Many people, however, do not breathe properly (from their diaphragm) and consequently, their body is oxygen deprived, leading to a terrain that is vulnerable to dis-ease. Our pets’ modern lifestyle does not promote daily deep breathing either. High-intensity exercise would create this deep breathing (hunting, chasing, and wrestling with their prey), but most pets do not experience high-intensity exercise daily.
The benefit of using hyperbaric oxygen chambers is the ability to safely increase the atmospheric pressure, resulting in an increase in blood oxygen concentration. This increase in blood oxygen is then able to diffuse deeper into the muscles and tissues, creating an oxygen-rich environment. Soft-sided hyperbaric chambers can reach 1.3 atmospheres of pressure and deliver the benefit of HBOT therapy.
These devices are affordable, and many people have purchased them for home use where they can be used for the whole family, 2 and 4 legged.
How does HBOT work?
Enhanced Oxygen Delivery: The increased pressure in the chamber allows oxygen to dissolve more effectively in the blood plasma, reaching areas with compromised blood flow and aiding in tissue repair.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects: HBOT reduces inflammation, a common underlying factor in many chronic conditions.
Immune System Boost: High levels of oxygen help white blood cells kill bacteria more efficiently and stimulate the production of new blood vessels, enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
Toxin Neutralization: HBOT assists in neutralizing toxins produced by bacteria, reducing the overall burden on the body. Conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic skin infections can benefit from HBOT.
3. PEMF Therapy: Stress Reduction And Immune Support
The body, whether human or animal, is a sophisticated machine, with many of the functions running without our conscious control. Our Autonomic Nervous System has two main components: sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic system is responsible for the “fight or flight” response (something is trying to kill you, and you need to save yourself), while the parasympathetic system is responsible for “rest, digest, detoxify, and heal.”
When in a parasympathetic state, the body can take in nutrients for growth, repair, reproduction, and immune function while detoxifying and eliminating waste and toxins.
To help my patients quickly go into a parasympathetic state, I utilize an FDA-approved PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequencies) device.
Magnesphere Therapy uses pulsed electromagnetic frequencies in the Pica Tesla ranges to entrain the body’s natural frequencies back to normal. Most PEMF devices use high frequencies that interrupt the body's signal, temporarily relieving symptoms but not resolving the issue. The Magnesphere can be programmed for all parasympathetic frequencies, all sympathetic frequencies, or a combination.
How Magnesphere Therapy Works
The Magnesphere device generates a low-level, uniform magnetic field through copper wires. This magnetic field interacts with and entrains the body’s autonomic nervous system to return to a normal state.
It specifically targets the dorsal root of the vagus nerve, which plays a significant role in regulating the parasympathetic nervous system.
By stimulating the vagus nerve, the therapy helps induce a state of deep relaxation, promoting ideal conditions for the body to heal.

4. Low Level Light Therapy also known as Photo Biomodulation: Harnessing The Power Of The Sun
Low Level Light Therapy (photo biomodulation) uses various colors of the visible light spectrum along with ultraviolet and infrared to activate endogenous cellular photosensitizers like cytochromes and flavins. This activation stimulates metabolic pathways and enhances immune responses. LLLT supports various physiological functions, improves circulation, and promotes tissue repair with no negative side effects.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) combines light of specific wavelengths with exogenous photosensitizing substances (such as Vitamin C and Curcumin) to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). These ROS are lethal to abnormal cells and help stop the formation of new blood vessels (anti-angiogenic). PDT is effective against a broad range of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, and fungi), penetrates damaged tissues, and does not contribute to pathogen resistance.
PDT and LLLT are valued for their ability to selectively destroy abnormal cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. They are used in the treatment of various conditions, including many types of cancers, precancerous lesions, and infections, due to their targeted nature. The laser device I use is unique as it uses “the rainbow” and can be utilized intravenously, intra lesional and topically.
The Future Of Veterinary Medicine
The antibiotic resistance crisis is a wake-up call for the veterinary and pet parent community.
It’s time to embrace a more integrative approach to animal care, one that prioritizes prevention and leverages the power of alternative therapies.
By reducing our reliance on antibiotics and exploring natural alternatives, we can protect the health of our pets and the public.
These therapies (Ozone Therapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Magnesphere Therapy, and Laser Therapy) are just a few of the many alternative solutions available.
The value of a holistic approach to health is that not only do we identify and address the root causes of imbalances, but we restore the body to homeostasis and a state of thriving.
As we move forward, let’s commit to educating ourselves and our clients about the dangers of antibiotic overuse and the benefits of alternative medicine. Together, we can turn the tide on antibiotic resistance and ensure a healthier future for all.
