The sickcare model is a brilliantly lucrative business. Imagine walking into a typical drugstore or supermarket. At the front, you're greeted by shelves stocked with processed foods, filled with ingredients that most people can't even pronounce. The marketing is top-notch—so people buy, consume, and eventually suffer the health consequences. When they visit their doctors for the resulting symptoms, they’re handed a prescription and told to return to the same store, this time to the pharmacy in the back, to pick up medication for the problems caused by those very foods. It’s a genius business cycle.

Now consider hospitals. These institutions are meant to be places of healing, so why do we find fast-food chains operating inside them? It’s a glaring contradiction that reveals a harsh reality: a cured patient is a lost customer. While many doctors genuinely care about their patients, they are trapped in a broken system. It’s not healthcare—it’s sickcare. Big Pharma has profited from our illnesses for decades, and it’s reached the point where they may even be creating diseases just to sell us the cure.

Imagine a world where we paid our doctors a monthly fee to keep us healthy, and payments stopped as soon as we developed symptoms, resuming only once they restored our health. Of course, this is a far-fetched idea, but it speaks to the need for a new approach—one where we address the root cause of illness and take back control of our health.

I spend Thursday evenings having dinner with my mother and my fiancée. My mother is my hero, but there’s always one issue: the TV stays on during dinner. Commercial after commercial flashes by, most of them funded by Big Pharma. I was shocked to learn that 75% of TV commercials in the U.S. are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. Out of 195 countries worldwide, only two— the U.S. and New Zealand—allow direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising on TV.

But it’s not just Big Pharma. Big Food dominates the airwaves, too. Up to 29% of TV ads are for food. Think about it: you’re bombarded with ads for medication, followed by fast food, then more drugs to fix the damage caused by that fast food. It’s an intentional cycle designed to manipulate both our conscious and subconscious minds. You don’t have symptoms because of a lack of medication!

Knowledge without application is meaningless

It gets even more absurd. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor at Tufts University, recently released a "food compass" that advised people to eat Lucky Charms and egg substitutes fried in vegetable oil over beef or eggs cooked in butter. We’re clearly heading in the wrong direction, but it’s not because we lack information. In fact, we’re drowning in it. The problem is we’re starving for wisdom.

As the saying goes, “knowledge without application is meaningless.” If information alone could transform lives, every librarian would be a multimillionaire. The key is to apply the right information in a structured way to truly change your life. In the following pages, I’ll outline a practical path forward, but first, let’s talk about an important principle I live by.

The George Costanza Effect

In our quest for health, many of us suffer from what I call the George Costanza Effect—a concept borrowed from my colleague, Dr. Jason Fung. In the Seinfeld TV show, George was known for being neurotic, self-loathing, and prone to making terrible decisions at the worst possible times. Yet, when he started doing the opposite of what he thought was right, his life dramatically improved.

Like George, we often recognize the problems in our health but pursue misguided solutions. Most conventional doctors diagnose symptoms, not the underlying causes. And, just like George, many Americans identify the issue but fall for fad diets and ineffective theories. In one episode, George reversed his usual habits—he ordered a different meal, approached a woman with brutal honesty, and suddenly, his life took a turn for the better. When it comes to health, following the exact opposite advice of mainstream guidelines can lead to similarly profound results.

What if I told you that the American Diabetes Association’s recommended diet is the same diet that leads to diabetes? Or that the food served to chemotherapy patients in hospitals is contributing to cancer growth? This book will challenge your current beliefs and encourage you to question conventional wisdom. You don’t have to blindly accept anything here—but I urge you to research and apply the information for yourself.

Let’s consider the weight loss industry, which was valued at $71 billion in 2020. Despite the countless diets, apps, and supplements available, obesity rates continue to rise. Around 24% of American men and 40% of women are actively dieting, but the results are dismal. Why? Because the methods they’re using aren’t addressing the real problem.

Being overweight significantly impacts your health, causing joint wear and tear that leads to earlier hip and knee replacements. According to the CDC, obesity is influenced by a complex interaction between genetics and environmental factors, but here’s the key: genes may load the gun, but your lifestyle pulls the trigger.

Yet, public figures like Oprah tell us that obesity isn’t our fault—it’s just bad luck. This victim mindset keeps people reliant on toxic pills and unsustainable diets. In reality, gene expression plays a crucial role in determining our health outcomes, as shown in studies on epigenetics. Genetically identical mice, for example, can look completely different based on which genes are activated. The same principle applies to humans.

It isn’t about playing the blame game. It’s about reclaiming your health by making informed, deliberate choices. You have the power to rewrite your own story—starting now.
