Impossible Is Nothing: Miracles in Modern Medicine

In the lobby of our clinic sits a large quote from one of the most controversial, successful, and challenged beings in history.

He wrote:

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it.

Impossible is not a fact.

It’s an opinion.

Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare.

Impossible is potential.

Impossible is temporary.

Impossible is nothing.”

Many of the patients who come to our clinic are in an impossible situation. They have stage IV cancer, they have M.S. and have been in a wheelchair for 30 years. They have been diagnosed with terminal ALS. They have Lyme disease and have been to a dozen or more doctors and are still not well.

These cases are seemingly impossible.

They have been told that nothing can be done.

Except…..

They’re not.

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it.”

To me, impossible is a dare.

It is temporary.

It is nothing.

The gentleman with M.S. in a wheelchair for 30 years and a diagnosis of optic neuritis that whole time was told by multiple neurologists that he would be color blind, and was for thirty years, until after seven weeks in our clinic, his color vision came back.  He said to me, “For thirty years, everything was gray and brown. Now I see the red and green in the poster behind your desk.”

Impossible is temporary.

Impossible is nothing.

Only a spirit can heal and reassemble molecules so that life can be, if it is nurtured to do so.

When the doctor is a realistic pessimist, he kills life and the spirit, and the patient succumbs.

Just two months ago, the 53-year-old woman with stage IV colon cancer with mets to her liver was told by her oncologist that nothing more could be done. She was devastated. She was going to go to hospice. Her spirit was wounded, and her will to live was gone.  Were it not for her dedicated husband, she would have. He brought her in to see us.

We talked about the impossible. We talked about miracles. I told her that 10% of hospice patients don’t die and have to go off hospice because they are revived. She began to change her mind. From our conversation, there was a spark. She ignited life back into her body.

She decided to do our program. Three months later, she is in remission except for a small area in her liver, which can be surgically removed. She told me that she is alive because I had her read the impossible quote, and that gave her hope that she maybe could live, and I told her we would do everything we could to help her. She said if not for that, she would be dead, as the doctor had taken all her hope. We had a very tearful hug and proof that impossible is a dare. Impossible is nothing.

Doctors, as a profession, have forgotten their spiritual roots. They have become mechanical automatons with prescription pads and stethoscopes and have betrayed their highest duty: to help the patient and give them hope, no matter what the circumstances. Yes, some won’t make it, but even then, if the doctor is there with a hug and a listening ear and the greatest empathy for his patient, then the ending is spiritual, and God will be experienced and there to comfort and guide the person to their next adventure. And that too is a miracle.

We can be good doctors.

We can be healers to the sick and ailing.

We can care deeply for that being in front of us.

We can encourage.

We can dare the impossible.

Because impossible is nothing.
