LATEST STORIES

JJ Virgin, a New York Times bestselling author, nutrition expert, and Fitness Hall of Famer, has spent decades transforming the conversation around health, fitness, and aging. At 61, she feels stronger, healthier, and more powerful than ever, and she’s determined to help other women do the same. In a recent interview, she shared her thoughts on biohacking, strength training, women's health advocacy, and the power of mindset in longevity.

From Fitness Enthusiast to Health Industry Icon

Virgin’s journey into the health world began when she was just 12 years old. "I had skin breakouts and started researching nutrition, which led me to cut out sugar and processed foods," she recalled to TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, in an interview for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed.” By her teenage years, she was teaching dance, calisthenics, and aerobics while working as a personal trainer. "There wasn’t even a word for personal trainers back then," she laughed.

She went on to earn degrees in biomechanics, exercise science, and gerontology, eventually launching her own businesses, writing bestselling books, and becoming a sought-after TV personality. But it wasn’t until she stepped outside the conventional health system that she truly found her calling.

The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. Stemming from the success of Biohack Yourself, TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli have grown Biohack Yourself Media to become the number one resource for health news, publishing over 500 articles ranging from breaking news to peer reviewed content.

Why You Need to “Major in the Majors” Before Biohacking

Virgin is passionate about biohacking—but she believes it must be earned. "People are rushing into red light therapy, cryotherapy, and hyperbaric oxygen chambers, but they’re skipping the basics. I call this majoring in the minors before majoring in the majors."

Her foundational health principles include:

  1. Prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods

  2. Strength training regularly

  3. Optimizing sleep and recovery

  4. Fostering strong relationships and social connections

"You can’t out-biohack poor sleep, bad food, and a sedentary lifestyle. Fix those first, and then add the cool tech."

Revolutionizing Women’s Health: Why Research Needs to Catch Up

Virgin is deeply frustrated by the lack of research on women’s health. "Women are not small men," she emphasized, quoting Dr. Stacy Sims. "Yet, most health studies are conducted on men, and women are left guessing."

She points out key disparities:

  • Only 6% of medical research is focused on women

  • Many studies exclude women due to hormonal fluctuations

  • The majority of supplements and diets are designed for men

Virgin co-produced the “sHEALed” documentary on women’s health to bring awareness to this issue. "Women are sicker than ever. Why? Because we’re following health advice that wasn’t made for us."

Strength Training: The Anti-Aging Secret Every Woman Needs

Virgin is on a mission to get more women lifting weights. "For decades, women were told to be small, thin, and fragile. But what we really need is to be strong, resilient, and powerful."

Her key takeaways:

  • Muscle is the currency of aging. "If you’re not strength training, you’re aging faster than you should."

  • Cardio is not enough. "Too much cardio without strength training can lead to muscle loss and metabolic slowdowns."

  • Women need more protein. "Most women aren’t eating nearly enough protein to support muscle maintenance."

Breaking the Stigma Around Aging: “50 Is Not the New 30”

Virgin rejects the phrase "50 is the new 30." Instead, she insists that "50 should be the best time of your life—not a throwback to youth."

"Aging is a privilege," she said. "But if you want to age powerfully, you have to train for it."

Bringing Functional Health to the Masses

Virgin’s Mindshare Summit and mastermind groups bring together top experts in functional medicine, helping practitioners step outside of the conventional healthcare system and build patient-centered, holistic businesses.

"The current healthcare model is broken," she said. "Doctors in big health systems are trapped by insurance companies and outdated guidelines. The real innovators are those stepping outside the system."

The Birth of SHEatine: A Game-Changer for Women’s Supplementation

Virgin’s latest venture, SHEatine, is a next-generation creatine supplement designed specifically for women. "Creatine is one of the most studied and beneficial supplements out there—but most women avoid it because they associate it with bodybuilders."

Her research revealed that women naturally have lower creatine stores and that supplementation can improve:

  • Muscle strength and endurance

  • Brain function and cognitive health

  • Bone density and longevity

SHEatine is formulated to avoid bloating and water retention, common side effects of traditional creatine monohydrate. "Women need creatine, but they need it in a way that works for them."

What’s Next: The Powerful Aging Movement

Virgin is currently working on her next book, centered around powerful aging. "It’s not about aging gracefully—it’s about aging powerfully."

The book will focus on:

  • Building muscle and strength for longevity

  • Using food as medicine

  • Harnessing the latest science in women’s health

  • Biohacking (but only after you’ve mastered the basics!)

She is also launching Powerful Aging Coaches, a program designed to train health professionals over 40 in her methodology. "If you’re in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, you want a coach who understands what you’re going through—not a 25-year-old trainer who’s never had a hot flash."

A Call to Action: “Own Your Health”

Virgin’s final message is one of empowerment. "Too many women feel powerless over their health. But you have control—you just have to take it."

Her top action steps for women:

  1. Start lifting weights today: "Even twice a week can transform your health."

  2. Eat more protein: "Muscle is built in the kitchen first."

  3. Educate yourself: "Don’t rely on outdated advice—do your research."

  4. Find a supportive community: "Surround yourself with women who want to be strong, not just skinny."

With her books, programs, and advocacy, JJ Virgin is leading a revolution in women’s health—proving that aging is not something to fear, but something to train for.
