THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY AND HEALTH
Inside Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s Revolutionary Approach

In a time when medical breakthroughs often originate in corporate labs and are carefully gated by academic journals, Dr. Nicholas Perricone remains a rare figure—a scientist-physician who has long challenged the orthodoxy and taken his message directly to the public. A dermatologist, nutritionist, and best-selling author, Dr. Perricone has spent over two decades advocating a radical idea that has since become mainstream: that chronic inflammation is the root of aging and most Western diseases.
Dr. Perricone sat down with TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli, Editors-in-Chief of longevity and wellness platform Biohack Yourself, for an interview for the influential upcoming women’s health documentary, “sHEALed,” to exclusively share his journey from ostracized academic to a public health innovator whose research has transformed skincare, nutrition, and wellness. His story is one of resilience, rebellion, and scientific curiosity, marked by personal sacrifice and a relentless drive to change how we view aging and disease.
The sHEALed Documentary is the sister documentary to Biohack Yourself, which became a massive success after exploding on the scene in December 2024 and ignited a firestorm of interest in information focused on health and longevity. Biohack Yourself features 114 prominent and respected high-profile politicians, doctors, bestselling authors, Ph.D.s, M.D.s, scientists, chemists, inventors, biotech investors, and world-renowned academics. Stemming from the success of Biohack Yourself, TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli have grown Biohack Yourself Media to become the number one resource for health news, publishing over 500 articles ranging from breaking news to peer reviewed content.
From Rebel to Revolutionary: A Life in Science
“I’ve always been a disruptor,” Dr. Perricone says with a calm conviction. That disruption began in medical school at Michigan State University, where his questions about nutrition’s role in health were met with resistance. “We treat patients, not diseases,” was the school’s mantra, yet nutrition remained almost entirely absent from the curriculum.
Dr. Perricone’s heretical suggestion that vitamin C and other nutrients could mitigate diseases like cancer drew ire from professors, many of whom dismissed pioneers like Linus Pauling outright. “They gasped when I brought up Pauling,” Perricone recalls. “It’s been a battle my whole life.”
That battle intensified in 2000 when he released his first book, The Wrinkle Cure. Far from a superficial beauty guide, it was rooted in a bold claim: that aging and disease are driven by inflammation—and that this could be addressed through diet, skincare, and lifestyle. The medical establishment balked. But the public listened.

The Inflammation-Aging Link
Dr. Perricone’s hypothesis took root in his own observations. “In medical school, I noticed inflammation around cancer cells under the microscope,” he explains. “Then I saw it again in Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis, and pancreatitis. Inflammation was everywhere.”
He connected the dots between diet and systemic inflammation. Foods that spike blood sugar—white bread, sugary snacks, processed meals—also triggered inflammatory responses in cells, while certain foods, like wild salmon, blueberries, and leafy greens, were anti-inflammatory.
This insight became the foundation for what is now widely known as the anti-inflammatory diet. The approach, according to Dr. Perricone, is simple: “Cut out sugar and processed foods, add in nutrient-dense whole foods, and your inflammation—and aging—drops dramatically.”
The 3-Day Glow-Up That Changed Everything
His breakthrough moment came on Good Morning America. “Diane Sawyer read my book and called me. She said, ‘It sounds too good to be true that people can look 10 years younger in three days.’ I told her, ‘Try it.’”
Three women from ABC took the challenge. “They came back three days later glowing. Skin clearer, moods better, down five pounds—not from fat, but from water loss due to reduced inflammation.” The result? Perricone’s book skyrocketed to #1 and salmon and blueberries sold out nationwide.
“I found that vanity can be a powerful motivator,” he laughs. “But what people didn’t realize is that when they’re doing it for their skin, they’re also lowering their risk for heart disease, cancer, and cognitive decline.”
Science Beyond Skincare
Despite success in skincare—he holds over 280 patents, many in dermatology and cosmeceuticals—Dr. Perricone’s passions extend far beyond. His current focus is on neuroscience, physics, and what he believes is the body’s most powerful “beauty molecule”: acetylcholine.
“Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in memory, muscle function, and even mitochondrial repair,” he explains. His upcoming book, The Beauty Molecule, explores how boosting acetylcholine levels through diet, supplements, and lifestyle may combat cognitive decline and slow the aging process.
Among his recommendations: eat choline-rich foods like eggs and broccoli, engage in meditation, and consider prescribed acetylcholine boosters (under medical guidance).

Hydrogen Water: The New Frontier
Perhaps most radical is Dr. Perricone’s latest venture—hydrogen water. “I was skeptical,” he admits. “But in Japan, it’s widely used for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. I had to see for myself.”
He collaborated with fellow scientist Dr. Peter Pugliese and discovered that drinking hydrogen water increased NAD levels—essential for cellular energy—by 12% within 15 minutes. “It permeates every cell and mitochondria. That’s powerful.”
His company, Perricone Hydrogen Water, now bottles therapeutic-grade hydrogen-infused water using artesian sources and advanced Japanese technology. One study in India found that participants with metabolic syndrome who drank hydrogen water—without changing diet or exercise—reversed their condition in just 24 weeks.
“That’s huge,” he says. “Metabolic syndrome leads to diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. If we can fix that with water, we could lower healthcare costs by a trillion dollars in three years.”
Key Takeaways from Dr. Perricone
Inflammation is the Root of Aging and Disease: Chronic, low-grade inflammation drives wrinkles, heart disease, cancer, and more.
The Anti-Inflammatory Diet Works Fast: In just three days, most people report brighter skin, elevated mood, and weight loss due to reduced inflammation.
Acetylcholine is the “Beauty Molecule”: Boosting acetylcholine supports cognitive health, muscle tone, and mitochondrial repair.
Hydrogen Water May Revolutionize Wellness: Scientifically proven to increase energy, reduce inflammation, and reverse metabolic syndrome.
Nutrition Education Should Start in Kindergarten: Teaching children about food can change the course of their health—and the world’s.

A Mission to Educate
Now 77 and still vibrant, Dr. Perricone is completing a Master’s in Public Health at Yale, with a new mission: bringing nutrition education into school systems.
“Most children, especially in low-income areas, eat two to three meals at school,” he notes. “We must make those meals count and teach them from a young age—real simple stuff, like ‘the more colors in your salad, the better.’”
His hope is to make nutrition as fundamental in education as math and science. “We all have a mission,” he says. “And to fulfill it, we need a mind that works and a healthy body.”
What You Can Do Today
Adopt an Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Focus on wild-caught salmon, blueberries, leafy greens, nuts, and healthy fats. Eliminate sugar and processed foods.
Support Acetylcholine Production: Incorporate eggs, avocados, and broccoli. Try meditation and manage stress.
Try Hydrogen Water: Look for products with therapeutic levels (1.0–1.3 ppm) in properly sealed containers.
Exercise Moderately: Aim for 20–30 minutes a day. Overtraining increases stress hormones and inflammation.
Educate Your Family: Teach kids simple nutrition principles early. Encourage schools to offer healthy meals.
