Farts Can Exit Through The Mouth If You Hold It In: Study

“Better to fart and feel the shame than to hold it in and feel the pain,” as the saying goes. But scientific research suggests that if you don’t pass the gas, it can leak out through your mouth.

Clare Collins, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at the University of Newcastle, examined the process of farting by observing 10 healthy people's amount of gas passed. Her findings suggest that holding in gas might cause it to be reabsorbed by the body and eventually exhaled through breath.

In an article originally published in The Conversation in 2018, Collins explained that retaining gas can lead to its absorption into the bloodstream. This absorbed gas is then transported to the lungs, where it is eventually exhaled through the mouth.

"Trying to hold it in leads to a build-up of pressure and major discomfort. A build-up of intestinal gas can trigger abdominal distension, with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath," the researcher explained.

Can you taste the fart when this happens?

According to Healthline, you won't taste farts that escape through the mouth.

While this process doesn’t result in a “mouth fart,” it does mean that the gas produced in the intestines can be expelled through exhalation if not released rectally.

Suppressing flatulence can also lead to other discomforts, such as bloating and abdominal pain. Doctors always advise the natural passage of gas.
