Today, statistics on pet health are the worst they've ever been. Dogs are living seven years shorter than they did just 20 years ago, and cancer rates in dogs have soared to an alarming 1:1.65 (nearly 100%). Cats, too, are suffering, with cancer rates estimated at 1:3—though I believe this is highly underreported. Clearly what we are doing in modern medicine and lifestyle is NOT WORKING!

Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems with the same mindset that created them.”

As bleak as the statistics are, this is the most exciting time to be alive and to be a pet parent!  People everywhere are “waking up”, no longer willing to accept the standard of care. They want health and longevity and they are seeking solutions to get it, for themselves and their fur family.  There is a growing community of people with a different mindset, people who are taking different actions so they get better results.  I am seeing new belief systems replacing the ones that are no longer serving us.

For too long, we’ve been conditioned to blame illness and cancer on bad genes, parasites, fungus, toxins, and other external factors. In 1971, President Nixon declared a “war on cancer” by signing the National Cancer Act. But there is no “war,” and there is no “enemy” that we must destroy. Cancer is not some foreign invader; it’s our own cells that have lost their ability to communicate with the body as a whole organism. These cells have gone rogue, trying their best to survive in an environment that no longer supports normal cellular function.

The fact is that the terrain—the cellular environment in which cells live and communicate—has become so out of balance that it allows the growth and proliferation of these rogue cells. The body’s innate systems of checks and balances, designed to control and remove free radicals and damaged cells, are no longer functioning properly. To reverse this trend, we must first understand the body’s biology and support the terrain and innate intelligence so that the body’s systems can function as they were meant to.

The 4 things that disease results from

Most people are familiar with Western medicine—it’s what you encounter every time you take your pet to a traditional veterinary practice. The pet has a symptom, and they get a medication. I refer to it as a “pill for an ill” medical practice. It’s what we’re accustomed to when we visit our own doctors: You present a symptom, and you’re given a pill. This approach might work well the first, second, or even third time, but at some point, you have to wonder why the problem keeps reoccurring (or gets worse).

In Eastern medicine, however, we not only address the symptoms to keep our patients comfortable, but we go further and seek to identify and resolve the root cause of the dis-ease. I specify dis-ease because I don't believe there is actually disease, I believe there is imbalance in the body resulting in dis ease.

Dis-ease results from 4 main things:

  1. Deficiencies of essential nutrients.  An essential nutrient is that nutrient that the body cannot manufacture in sufficient quantities on its own. These essential nutrients must be suppled through the diet. Unfortunately, in our modern world, our diet is deficient because the farming practices have not been sustainable, they are not regenerative and result in the food growing in the soil being nutrient depleted.

  2. Toxicities. Since World War II, 1942, there have been over 100,000 synthetic toxins developed and released into our food and water systems. For most individuals, there is a combination of deficiencies and toxicities occurring together.

  3. Mitochondrial dysfunction. The mitochondria are the power houses that live symbiotically in our cells and our fur babies cells, producing the energy our bodies need to function and also providing communication with the microbiome (the organisms that live in and on us) telling our DNA what do express or turn off. When do mitochondria become unhealthy, it triggers, a cascade of biological system failures.

  4. Trapped emotions. All dis-ease has trapped emotions.  The Chinese over 2000 years ago associated specific emotions expressed when there is imbalance in certain organs. As an example, an unbalance in the liver is associated with the emotion of anger. The kidney and bladder are associated with fear.  The lungs are associate with grief.

Taking a “holistic approach” to health and longevity entails looking at ALL aspects, body, mind and spirit, identifying the root cause of dis-ease and providing the body with the support it needs to allow the innate intelligence of the body to correct, restoring the ability to thrive.

Once the deficiencies and toxicities have been identified and resolved, there are many safe and effective modalities that can be used to return balance to a system in dis-ease. Alternative options include Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, chiropractic, herbs, essential oils, energy therapies, intrinsic energy, magnetic resonance, pulsed electromagnetic frequencies (PEMF), ozone therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, laser therapy, homeopathy, low level light therapy, photodynamic therapy and much more. All of these modalities are aimed at treating the root cause of dis-ease and restoring balance to the body.

Western medicine isn't the answer to everything

Western medicine certainly offers amazing tools in diagnostics and therapy, but it is not the answer to everything. That’s why I combine the best of both worlds: Western medicine, with its advanced diagnostic tools, plus 2,000 years of ancient wisdom, along with “Bio Hacking”, resulting in an affordable, safe, effective, integrated, and sustainable health approach.

In the next article I will outline the 6 steps to health and healing I use for my patients and myself.
