The Power You’re Losing First: Why Explosiveness Declines After 40 — and How to Get It Back

Most men over 40 don’t lose strength first.
They lose speed.
It’s subtle at first. A slower reaction when stepping off a curb. A delayed catch when something falls. A split-second hesitation in a pickup basketball game. Then one day, it shows up as a strained hamstring, a fall, or the quiet realization that you just don’t feel “athletic” anymore.
When I rebuilt UFC fighters early in my career, what we were really rebuilding wasn’t size — it was explosiveness. Today, working with high-performing men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, I see the same biological pattern.
Explosive capacity is the first physical quality to decline with age.
And it is also one of the most important to preserve for longevity.
Why Power Declines Faster Than Strength
Muscle mass decreases gradually with age, a process known as sarcopenia. But what declines more rapidly is the rate of force development — how quickly your body can produce force.
That’s a nervous system issue.
Explosiveness depends heavily on fast-twitch muscle fibers. These fibers are responsible for rapid, high-force movements — jumping, sprinting, reacting, punching, changing direction. As we age, several things happen simultaneously:
Fast-twitch fiber size decreases.
Neural firing frequency slows.
Motor unit recruitment efficiency declines.
Tendons lose elastic responsiveness.
Collagen cross-linking increases, reducing tissue adaptability.
The result is not immediate weakness — it’s delayed responsiveness.
You might still deadlift decent weight. But if you trip unexpectedly, the ability to generate rapid stabilizing force is compromised. That’s where injuries happen.
Power is protective.
The Nervous System Is the Real Target
In combat sports, a punch is decided by milliseconds. In life after 50, so is balance recovery.
Explosive capacity is a neurological skill. When you train explosively — properly and progressively — you are teaching the nervous system to recruit high-threshold motor units quickly. You are improving intermuscular coordination. You are enhancing communication speed between the brain and the muscle.
Slow, controlled strength training builds structure. That is necessary. But without velocity exposure, the nervous system does not maintain its speed.
Train slow, move slow.
Train reactive, stay reactive.
For men over 40, the goal is not reckless plyometrics or joint abuse. The goal is to restore neural efficiency.
This is the difference between “exercise” and athletic preservation.
Tendons: The Forgotten Anti-Aging Tissue
Here’s what most fitness programs ignore: tendons age differently from muscles.
Tendons are collagen-dense tissues responsible for storing and releasing elastic energy. In younger years, they behave like powerful springs. They absorb force and rebound efficiently.
With age and inactivity, tendons stiffen in the wrong way. They become brittle instead of elastic. Blood flow diminishes. Mechanical loading decreases collagen turnover. The ability to recycle energy during movement fades.
When fighters train properly, they develop elastic recoil. When executives sit too long and lift too slowly, they lose it.
Explosive training — when intelligently layered on top of strength — improves tendon stiffness functionally. It enhances elastic recoil. It stimulates collagen remodeling. It increases resilience.
In other words, controlled exposure to speed is anti-aging medicine for connective tissue.

Energy Systems and the Illusion of “Cardio”
Most men over 40 equate conditioning with steady-state cardio. Long jogs. Spin classes. Ellipticals.
That builds aerobic capacity.
But it does very little for explosive repeatability.
Explosive movement relies primarily on the ATP-phosphocreatine system — a rapid energy source that fuels bursts under ten seconds. Between those bursts, the oxidative (aerobic) system restores phosphocreatine.
This interplay is critical.
If your aerobic base is strong but you never train bursts, you lack metabolic sharpness.If you train only bursts and neglect aerobic development, recovery between efforts collapses.
True vitality is layered metabolism.
You need the ability to surge — and recover.
That is what fighters train. And it is what aging bodies desperately need.
Why This Matters for Longevity
Research consistently shows that power output correlates strongly with all-cause mortality risk. Grip strength, lower-body power, and gait speed are predictive markers of longevity.
Explosive capacity is not just athletic currency. It is biological currency.
The ability to generate force quickly:
Reduces fall risk
Improves balance reflexes
Enhances insulin sensitivity
Stimulates anabolic hormone response
Improves bone density
Preserves motor neuron connectivity
When power declines, fragility increases.
When power is preserved, resilience extends.

Train Like a Fighter — Age Like an Athlete

Today, you don’t need to step into a cage.
But you do need the biological advantages that explosive training preserves.
The key is intelligent layering:
Foundational multi-plane strength
Progressive introduction of controlled explosive movements
Recovery prioritization
Metabolic conditioning that supports burst and restoration
Not bodybuilding.
Not reckless jumping.
Not ego lifting.
But precise neurological conditioning.
The goal after 40 is not to chase your 25-year-old self.
It’s to maintain the capacity to move like him — without the damage.
Power is the first thing to fade.
It should be the first thing you rebuild.
