# Costco Egg Recall Raised To Highest Risk Level; FDA Warns It May Cause Death

The Food and Drug Administration has classified the recall of over 259,000 eggs sold at Costco as the highest infection risk level, warning these may cause "serious adverse health consequences or death."

In November, Handsome Brook Farms [issued a recall](https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/handsome-brook-farms-issues-recall-kirkland-signature-organic-pasture-raised-24-count-eggs-because#recall-announcement) of 10,800 cartons of its 24-count eggs for possible Salmonella contamination. These products were sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature brand.

On Friday, the [FDA raised the recall warning](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/index.cfm?Product=211343) to a Class I, the highest level. The [agency describes](https://www.fda.gov/safety/industry-guidance-recalls/recalls-background-and-definitions) this as a situation in which "there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

Salmonella is an infection from the Salmonella bacteria that causes diarrhea, stomach pains, fever, vomiting, and headache, the [Cleveland Clinic](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15697-salmonella) explained. The infection usually goes away by itself, but severe cases can lead to serious sickness and sometimes death.

[Data](https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/general/index.html) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Salmonella causes about 1.3 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States yearly.

The potentially harmful eggs were shipped to 25 Costo locations across five states--Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, the FDA memo noted.

The recall was initiated for the Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-ct eggs with a UPC 9661910680 and Julian code 327.

The recall was initiated after the company found that eggs not fit for retail were packaged and distributed in different locations. At the time of the initial recall in November, no related illnesses were recorded.
