At 40, Dr. Mindy Pelz was in the best shape of her life, but three years later, she hit a roadblock. The usual weight loss advice wasn't working, and she faced issues with sleep, weight gain, and mood swings despite maintaining her lifestyle. "I was fit, I was really at the peak of my health. By 43, everything had unraveled," she explains. This personal struggle led her to delve into the science of hormones.

Before turning 40, Dr. Pelz followed conventional fitness routines involving intense exercise and calorie restriction, a regimen she knew well as a former competitive tennis player. However, by age 43, this approach was ineffective, prompting her to explore alternative methods for maintaining health and hormonal balance. "I was doing what everybody else does when they want to get in good shape."

Globally recognized for empowering women to understand and trust their bodies, Dr. Pelz has significantly advanced the conversation around women's hormonal health. Her high-profile clients, bestselling books, influential podcast, and active digital presence underscore her commitment to improving women's lives. "We have a mission that we've come up with. Our goal is to help the world become hormonally literate."

To address hormonal imbalances in her patients, Dr. Pelz uses various tests to assess health markers and identify underlying issues, enabling her to tailor personalized lifestyle and dietary adjustments to restore hormonal harmony. Beyond her patient work, Dr. Pelz collaborates with nonprofits to educate the younger generation, particularly girls experiencing early puberty. She launched the “Give Like a Girl” project to support and empower women worldwide. "I'm partnering with several nonprofits to figure out how do we get this into the teenage life, how do we educate them," she notes.

Environmental factors significantly contribute to hormonal imbalances. Dr. Pelz stresses the importance of addressing these factors, noting their potential role in early menopause and other disruptions. “We gotta help women get through those perimenopausal years to get into the post-menopausal years thriving. It's not about living longer. It's about that sand trap of perimenopause is challenging to women,” she explains.

Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage for optimal hormonal balance is also crucial. Dr. Pelz advises that women naturally carry a slightly higher body fat percentage, ideally between 18-20%. Insufficient body fat can disrupt sex hormone balance, highlighting the need to prioritize hormonal health over societal norms. "The goal is not for us all to fit into a size zero or size two. The goal is for us to find homeostasis for our bodies."

Modern societal trends, such as increased disconnection through social media, elevate cortisol levels and contribute to insulin resistance, potentially affecting young women's future fertility rates. Dr. Pelz advocates for greater hormonal literacy and the normalization of discussions around menstrual cycles and menopause, emphasizing their roles in detoxification and overall health. "I have no idea what's gonna happen to fertility rates down the road, but we've got a massive problem with the disconnect and the stress that social media causes," she notes.
